EMF Safety Tips
EMF And RF Radiation Exposure
Electromagnetic fields (EMFs) and RF Radiation (RF) surround us 24/7. They are emitted by everyday devices including cell phones, Wi-Fi routers, microwaves, power cords, lighting systems, appliances and more. It is essential to understand how to minimize unnecessary exposure to create a safer living environment.
Top EMF Safety Tips
RF Radiation
- Minimize your time on a cell phone. Studies have demonstrated that biological effects occur when holding the device against your ear 30 seconds into making or receiving a call. Use your cell phone to take messages and use a corded land line to make calls.
- When taking calls with a cellphone, use speakerphone or wired headphones to avoid holding the phone against your head.
- Cell phones emit radiation even when you are not making a call. For this reason wireless communication devices should not be carried against your body. Cell phones kept in pockets should be turned off.
- All microwave ovens leak RF radiation when they are in use. Replace microwave ovens with safer appliances such as a toaster or a conventional electric or gas range and oven.
- Replace all DECT / digital cordless phones with corded land line telephones. The cordless phone base station emits high levels of RF radiation even when idle, with corded land line telephones. Corded land line telephones have low EMF emissions and are a good alternative.
- Avoid cell phone use in a car. The RF signals from your cell phone will intensify because of multiple reflections from the metal surfaces of the car.
- Many children's games use wireless technology for their controllers. Disable the wireless component if possible and replace wireless controllers with a wired option. Verify that RF emissions have ceased with an RF detector or RF Meter.
- When using a notebook/laptop or a computer use a hard wired network connection. Settings to disable the wireless connection are found in Network Settings on a PC or AirPort on a Mac.
- Replace wireless internet routers with hard wired units. Some wireless router models allow the user to shut off the wireless component and convert it to a hard wired unit.
- Limit Smart Phone wireless services that are not in use on. WiFi, Bluetooth, Mobile/Cellular Data, Mobile HotSpot are optional can be turned off when not in use. Turning these services off can greatly reduce total RF radiation emitting from the smart phone.
- Avoid all “smart” devices, wearables, and appliances (ie; Alexa, Google Assistant, Genie, Nest, Ring, FitBit, Apple Watch, etc.).
AC Magnetic And Electric Fields
- Do not use compact fluorescent or any low voltage lighting technologies. CFLs emit high levels of electric fields and magnetic fields. Do not use compact fluorescent lights (CFL) or any low voltage lighting technologies. CFLs emit high levels of electric and magnetic fields. Incandescent light bulbs or 120 volt halogen bulbs are a safer alternative.
- DVDs / VCRs, electric clock radios/alarm clocks, stereo systems, heating pads, electric blankets, and water beds must be unplugged to cease electric and magnetic field emissions. During sleeping hours, remove or unplug electronic devices located in the sleeping areas.
- Turn power off at main electrical panel for sleeping areas before going to sleep.
- Replace dimmer switches with regular on/off switch. Dimmer switches are known for generating dirty electricity.
- Replace unshielded power cords and unshielded power bar/strips with shielded version, if possible. Shielded power cords and power bars will reduce AC Electric field exposure.
- Unplug electronics rarely used. For example, the decorative lamp on child's nightstand or electric piano.
- Smart meters can produce a phenomenon called Dirty Electricity. Opt out of your smart meter installation if possible.
Sleeping Areas
- If you use Wi-Fi, unplug it at night (hint: you can use a timer or remote cut-off switch).
- Power cell phones off or place them on Airplane mode during sleeping hours and when not in use. Be sure Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are also disabled.
- Store your phone far from sleeping areas.
- Unplug all electronics within 6-8 feet of the bed. Use a battery-powered clock.
- Turn off circuit breakers to bedrooms during sleeping hours. Automation can be added at an additional cost.
